Solar vs. Hardwired House Numbers: How to Choose
Compare power arrangements, individual characters and complete address signs, then check size, mounting and purchase details.

Choose the mounting position and power arrangement before choosing the lettering style. Solar house numbers reduce the need to route electrical power to an address, while hardwired models depend on a compatible electrical supply. Neither description tells you, by itself, whether an address will be readable or easy to install at your home.
When integrated solar house numbers may fit
Consider an integrated solar number when the intended position receives direct sunlight, there is no convenient power connection, and screw mounting is suitable for the surface. You still need enough space for the full address and a clear line of sight from the approach.
Luma has a panel and rechargeable battery inside each character and uses a sliding switch for warm white, cool white or mixed light. It is not a Wi-Fi device, a no-drill adhesive sign or a remote-panel kit. Its documented character range is 0–9 plus A, B, C, D and S; current stock and purchase quantities must be checked in the item listing.
When a hardwired option may fit better
If the required number position is deeply shaded, a suitable wired light may avoid reliance on that location’s daily solar input. Check the exact model’s voltage, required power supply, outdoor rating and installation instructions. Hardwired products are not all interchangeable, and may require a qualified installer.
This is a comparison of power arrangements, not a laboratory comparison of competing products. We do not claim that every wired product is brighter, that every solar product lasts longer, or that one approach is always cheaper over its lifetime.
Independent characters or a complete solar address sign?
Individual characters let you assemble a number one piece at a time. A complete plaque puts an address on a shared sign surface. Ground-stake signs, double-sided signs and street-name plaques solve different mounting and visibility needs.
- Count the characters in your address, including repeats. A one-light package is not automatically a full-address set.
- Check whether required letters actually exist. A small letter range is not full street-name customization.
- Compare the complete purchase: character quantities, required accessories, shipping and installation. Do not compare one character’s price with a complete sign’s price.
- For a mailbox or fence, check both the fixing surface and the panel exposure. The location name alone does not establish compatibility.
Luma is an individual-character design. Do not assume arrows, double-sided lighting, ground stakes or an external solar panel are included.
Size, layout and visibility
Luma characters are approximately 6.7 inches tall, but width varies by character. Plan using the current dimensions of each digit and the desired spacing. For an address such as 1001, confirm the width and quantity of both repeated characters rather than estimating from a photo.
For a vertical layout, keep characters upright and avoid one unit shading another. A vertical arrangement is not permission to rotate the solar panel sideways. Check the full address from the road or walkway after dark; background contrast, plants and viewing angle matter alongside size.
We do not provide a universal minimum-size rule for local address regulations. Check the rules that apply to your location or homeowners association if relevant.
Backlit, front-lit, warm or cool?
Backlit and front-lit describe where light is directed, not how the product is powered. Likewise, LED describes the light source and solar describes the energy supply: they are not competing categories.
Luma’s warm white setting is listed as 2700K and its cool white setting as 5000K, with a mixed setting using both. Compare the appearance against your own wall and other exterior lighting. Mixed light is not RGB, and a color option does not establish a particular brightness or reading distance.
Before you order: six checks
- Does direct sunlight reach the intended panel position? If not, reconsider the position or power arrangement.
- Are every required character and repeated quantity available?
- Will the complete address fit, with appropriate spacing?
- Is the mounting method suitable for the wall, fence or post?
- Are the weather and temperature conditions within the model’s instructions?
- Do you understand the purchase-specific delivery, return and warranty terms?
For Luma, the manual’s runtime figure depends on sufficient sunlight. Check the sunlight and runtime guide before assuming an all-night result.
